How To Make Brushing Your Teeth A Habit

How To Make Brushing Your Teeth A Habit

Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is one of the best things you can do to maintain good dental health. You’ve probably heard us say that more than once, at The Yuma Dentist in Yuma and Fortuna Foothills AZ.

Not many patients like to admit it, but studies show that some people have a hard time working regular brushing into their daily schedule. If that sounds like you, please keep reading. We’ve got five tips to help turn brushing into a habit.

  • In Plain Sight. Leaving your toothbrush where you’re sure to see it will remind you. In a cup on the bathroom counter, or in a holder just by it, are tried-and-true techniques.
  • Find a toothbrush you like. Leaving it in plain sight is part one. Part two? A toothbrush you like! A brush with a comfortable handle can be a pleasure to use.
  • Toothpaste, too. There’s a wide selection of toothpaste out there. You may want something specific, like a sensitive-teeth paste, or one that whitens. Just make sure you like the flavor, and that it contains fluoride. Read the label!
  • Make it fun! Making it enjoyable is a great motivator. You like your toothbrush and toothpaste. Now, how about listening to your favorite music when you brush? Or brushing while you watch TV or listen to a podcast?
  • Put it on your to-do list. A lot of us are motivated by lists. Having a to-do list of daily activities might encourage you to pick up the brush and clean those teeth. It can be satisfying to check off another item on your list.

That’s five. We have more! Set an alarm. Brush in the shower. Right after breakfast. Right before bed.

Whatever works! At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma and Fortuna Foothills AZ we want all our patients to have clean teeth and healthy gums. Brush twice a day, remember to floss, and see us for regular checkups. People from Foothills, Winter Haven CA, and Somerton come to our practice for dental implants, complete general dentistry, and much more. Call for an appointment today!

A Dentist’s Indispensable Tool: The X-ray

Foothills cosmetic dental and tooth implants

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, providing first rate dental care is much easier when we have extensive information about our patients’ dental health.

Pictures are more accurate than written notes. Since they show what’s going on below the surface, they’re worth even more than a thousand words. Along with a thorough visual oral exam, most dentists want complete and up-to-date X-rays.

There are several types of x-rays:

  • Bite-Wing x-rays give us a picture of the upper and lower back teeth. We can see how they touch each other and see if there is any decay.
  • Panoramic x-rays give us the big picture: a view of the teeth, jaws and jaw joints, nasal area, and even the sinuses. These are especially useful if we think the patient may need orthodontics or a dental implant.
  • Occlusal x-rays show us the floor of the mouth, and the bite of the upper or lower jaw. They’re good for showing the development of children’s teeth, both the baby and permanent teeth.

How often we take X-rays is largely determined by your age as well as the state of your dental health. Because children are growing and experience more changes to their teeth, they usually need X-rays more frequently.

Should you worry about X-rays? They use radiation, but are designed to minimize patient exposure. Patients only get negligible amounts, making them safe. The latest generations of x-rays reduce radiation even more. Still, we take the added safety measure of covering the patient with a heavy leaded apron and collar.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we are committed to providing the best possible dental care. Our services include general and restorative dentistry. We also have an office in Fortuna Foothills. Schedule an appointment with us today.

Fight Plaque Build-up!

Plaque is that filmy substance that is contantly forming on the surface of teeth. It isn’t easy to see it and brushing your teeth doesn’t get it all, so having a cleaning and checkup every six months at The Yuma Dentist is a very good idea.

That filmy plaque is formed by bacteria and sugars, and coats the teeth. It’s a constant process; the stuff is always forming. That’s why you should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. It’s important to remove plaque because plaque is what causes cavities.

Fighting Plaque

The best strategy for fighting plaque is to brush your teeth after every meal. That way, you get it as soon as it forms. We recommend that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a light touch. Hard bristles can be pretty rough on your gums.

Remember to toss your toothbrush out and get a new one every three months or so. Once the bristles start to bend out of shape they don’t work as well. It’s also important to hold the bristles at a 45-degree angle as you brush, and use gentle, circular strokes.

Two Minute Warning

Try to brush for two minutes! Some people find that challenging. You can use a timer to help, or listen to some music to take your mind off the brushing. That way the time will fly by, and you may even go beyond that two minute minimum.

Get inside and outside the teeth, and along the chewing surfaces, too. Don’t forget to brush your tongue. Your objective is to get your entire mouth.

Proper brushing also helps to fight gum disease.

At The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ, we want all our patients to enjoy clean teeth and excellent dental health. So brush and floss twice a day, and see us for a cleaning and checkkup every six months. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry, and have offices in Yuma and Fortuna Hills. Schedule your next appointment today!

What is Patient-Centered Dental Care?

cosmetic dentistry Yuma

What is your perception of the patient-dentist relationship? Would you call it one-sided? Does it seem like the dentist examines your teeth, decides on the course of treatment, and performs the procedure, and you’re practically a bystander? At the Yuma Family Dentist in Yuma AZ, we don’t do things that way.

It Starts With The Atmosphere

You will recognize the difference when you first walk in our doors. You will discover a warm, pleasing atmosphere. We don’t push patients through as if they were on an assembly line.

As a amalgam free dentistry practice, we see you as a whole person, not just a mouth full of teeth. When we meet with you, you will be able to talk about more than just your oral health. You will discuss your lifestyle, your past dental experiences, your goals, and your concerns. We want to create a long-term relationship with you—it benefits you and helps us do our jobs well.

We Listen

When we examine a patient and find a problem, there is rarely only one solution proposed. We take as much time as necessary to explain the options and answer your questions.

By listening carefully, communicating clearly, and asking the right questions, we can fully assess the many critical factors that impact your present and future oral health.

Does This Sound Good to You?

If this sounds like a good approach, call The Yuma Dentist in Yuma AZ to schedule an appointment. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule a checkup today!

The Benefits of Laser Dentistry

At Yuma Family Dentist You

This article from The Yuma Dentist looks at laser dentistry. It may sound like something from science fiction, but laser dentistry provides an excellent alternative to drills. Much of the dental care performed with lasers doesn’t require that patients to be medicated, allowing for quicker healing times.

Lasers used in dentistry come in two basic categories: hard tissue and soft tissue. At the Yuma Dentist, we have both.

Less Stress

Many patients become anxious while waiting for a shot of painkiller before a dental procedure. Laser dentistry allows for a more relaxed, less stressful dental visit. Yuma Dentist patients also appreciate going home without a numb mouth or drool dripping down their chin.

People in need of oral surgery will experience less bleeding thanks to laser dentistry. Some of the procedures that are performed with lasers are: infected root canal treatment, gum and bone reshaping, wisdom teeth extraction, and teeth whitening.

Along with laser dentistry, The Yuma Dentist offers general and cosmetic dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today.

Yuma Family Dentist: Calming Root Canal Fears

AZ Dentist Calms Root Canal FearsA dentist’s office is sometimes seen as a painful and scary place. But we discourage that at The Yuma Family Dentist. But try as we might, root canals still have a strong association with pain. It doesn’t need to be that way.

A root canal becomes necessary when a tooth is badly infected or decayed. Ask anyone who’s been there: infected teeth can really hurt. A root canal is going to alleviate that pain.

Root canals are done to clean the inside of the tooth by removing the bacteria, soft tissue (called pulp), decayed nerve tissue, and any debris that may be causing the infection and pain. Once it’s cleaned out, we seal the tooth to prevent further decay and finish by applying a crown or filling. This is the process and purpose of a root canal.

To put it another way, root canals have a bad reputation, and with modern sedation dentistry, it is not deserved. Though a root canal can be intimidating or scary, educating yourself and talking to us can relieve much of your anxiety.

The Yuma Dentist performs root canals, and also offers general dentistry. Never ignore an aching tooth! Schedule an appointment with us today.

Why Sports Drinks Put Teeth At Risk

Yuma Dental Financing

Many health-conscious people exercise regularly, and some use sports drinks for hydration. In this post, Yuma Dentist offers a word of caution.

While it’s true that sports drinks help preserve electrolyte levels in the body (and pose fewer health risks than energy drinks), their acidity can erode tooth enamel. And when tooth enamel is compromised, those pearly whites are more staining, discoloration, and decay.

Nobody wants stained teeth, so next time you’re at the gym, try substituting water for sports drinks.

If you have already noticed staining or tooth discoloration and would like to know more about porcelain veneers or teeth whitening, give The Yuma Dentist a call. We have offices in Yuma and Fortuna Foothills.

Trust The Yuma Dentist For Accurate Dental Info

Yuma family dentistry

Dental patients are more informed than ever before and it’s not surprising that much of their knowledge about oral health and dental treatment is gleaned from online sources. Proactive self-education can be beneficial for you and your family, especially if it helps with living a healthy lifestyle. At the Yuma Dentist, we caution our friends and neighbors not to rely on online dental information exclusively; let us  verify its accuracy.

Misconceptions about medical treatment in general, and dentistry in particular, began circulating long before personal computers became ubiquitous. But the web has accelerated the speed and distance they can travel.

Some of the most frequent dental myths are focused on the safety of x-rays, the risk of root canals, the facts about fluoride, and the effectiveness of alternative practices such as oil pulling.

In worst-case scenarios, patients delay or avoid dental treatment because of something they read online. We encourage our patients to bring any concerns to The Yuma Dentist. We’ll help you sort the reliable information from the less-reliable.

At Yuma Family Dentist, we are enthusiastic about keeping your smile healthy and beautiful for life. We provide general and cosmetic dentistry, including dental implants. Schedule your next appointment with us today.
