Fight Plaque Build-up!

Plaque is that filmy substance that is contantly forming on the surface of teeth. It isn’t easy to see it and brushing your teeth doesn’t get it all, so having a cleaning and checkup every six months at The Yuma Dentist is a very good idea.

That filmy plaque is formed by bacteria and sugars, and coats the teeth. It’s a constant process; the stuff is always forming. That’s why you should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. It’s important to remove plaque because plaque is what causes cavities.

Fighting Plaque

The best strategy for fighting plaque is to brush your teeth after every meal. That way, you get it as soon as it forms. We recommend that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a light touch. Hard bristles can be pretty rough on your gums.

Remember to toss your toothbrush out and get a new one every three months or so. Once the bristles start to bend out of shape they don’t work as well. It’s also important to hold the bristles at a 45-degree angle as you brush, and use gentle, circular strokes.

Two Minute Warning

Try to brush for two minutes! Some people find that challenging. You can use a timer to help, or listen to some music to take your mind off the brushing. That way the time will fly by, and you may even go beyond that two minute minimum.

Get inside and outside the teeth, and along the chewing surfaces, too. Don’t forget to brush your tongue. Your objective is to get your entire mouth.

Proper brushing also helps to fight gum disease.
